City of Winchester Hydrant Flushing Program

Annual maintenance program could cause discoloration in residents' water

WINCHESTER, Va. - The city of Winchester will start testing and flushing all of Winchester's 1,200 fire hydrants starting today and continuing through June.

The process of periodically "flushing" fire hydrants is an important preventive maintenance activity and is necessary to maintain a high quality and reliable water system.

It also helps make sure the fire hydrants are fully operational in the event of a fire.

Officials said if there is discoloration with your water during this time, residents should not be alarmed because it's all part of an annual maintenance program.

If discoloration occurs after crews have flushed the hydrants, officials recommend running all faucets for one or two minutes to clear the water.
