New festivities added to Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival agenda

"Doors In Bloom" and tennis tournament included, just to name a few

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is a month away, and festival organizers said this year will be a little more festive.
"We're just trying to keep things exciting for people so it's not the same festival every year," said Mike Stanfield, President of Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. "We want a little something different [and] a little something more exciting ."
One of the latest additions is "Doors in Bloom," where residents and businesses have the opportunity to decorate the home of their door or business in pink and green traditional bloom decorations in celebration of the festival.
Entries can be made by texting in a photo or uploading a picture to their website. Then, judges will decide which door incorporated the "Bloomtown: Bringing the Wow" for 90 years theme the best.
"They're [the judges] going to narrow it down to the top five businesses and top five residential applicants and then go view those ten entries," said Stanfield. "In fact, we're gonna put them [the judges] in a limo and let them ride around. It's gonna be a lot of fun!"
Judges will be looking at use of color, space, creative material and overall impression to make a final decision.
There will be first, second and third place winners in each category: residential and business.
"We'll have a special prize for them, and, also, we're gonna let the winners ride in the parade," said Stanfield.
Festival organizers have also revealed the festival's first United States Tennis Association-sanctioned amateur tennis tournament at Stonebrook Club.
"We're very excited to add it to our repertoire of fitness-oriented events along with our Apple Blossom 10k, 'the Bloomin' Mile' and our golf tournament. This is just one more thing that allows people to get out and do something healthy and exciting and still participate in the festival," said Stanfield.
He also added that they will have more announcements on celebrity guests in the coming weeks.
