One Person Killed in Route 340 Crash

FREDERICK, COUNTY, Md. - One person was killed following a two vehicle crash that happened on westbound Route 340 near Lander Road around 10:50 p.m. on Friday.

The person has been identified as Kenny Burcham, 54, of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Preliminary investigation showed Burcham was driving in his 1997 Jeep Cherokee when he drifted off the roadway, and crashed into the back of a stationary 2007 Volvo Truck Tractor with a loaded utility semi-trailer in tow.

When the crash took place, Burcham was traveling west on Route 340 in lane two, and the commercial motor vehicle was on the right shoulder of Route 340.

Further investigation revealed the truck tractor was stopped on the shoulder of the roadway from mechanical problems. The driver of the truck tractor, Hassan Mahamat of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was not hurt.

Maryland State Police Western Region Reconstruction Team and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division responded to the scene.

There does not appear to be any impairment issues on the park of either driver, according to the press release. All westbound lanes of Route 340 were shut down from 10:50 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
