State Deputy Secretary of Education visits Coyle Free Library

Deputy reads book to young children for One Book, Every Young Child Month

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. - The Coyle Free Library welcomed a special guest who came to read to the kids in honor of an event called One Book, Every Young Child Month.

Pennsylvania’s Deputy Secretary of Education Glenn Miller spent the morning with young children at Coyle Free Library. During the time, he was able to read the book “Daniel Finds a Poem.”

“It’s a challenge reading a book upside down to children, but they were a wonderful audience. Kids are so engaging, and when you read to them, you can see how much it matters,” Miller said.

The book was selected for One Book, Every Young Child Month, an annual, state-wide program where Pennsylvania sponsors select what they believe to be the perfect book to read to young children.

“It highlights the importance of reading to children early, and it highlights the important role that libraries play in that early development,” Miller said.

The program also provides websites and activities for families to do with their children. Families were able to receive free copies of the book.

“Parents are their first teachers, and it is a wonderful way to help them in that endeavor,” Bernice Crouse, Executive Director, Franklin County Library System, said.

“I encourage all parents [to] take time to read to your children. It’s the most important thing you can do, particularly in those early years,” Miller said.

Miller was also able to talk about the recent renovations being made at the library, recently receiving a Keystone Grant for its renovations. He believes community libraries are important, because it is the one place open to all where people can become more literate.

“When we have strong libraries, we have a strong society,” Miller said.

The library is expected to be finished with renovations come next fall.
