Retired Physican Arrives to Dialysis Appointment in Style

- HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Edward Ditto is a retired physician and for more than 50 years he was actively involved with the Hagerstown Fire Department. Ditto also receives dialysis three times a week.

On Wednesday, his past and present came together in a way that put a big smile of his face.

"We were in there having a discussion when he heard a siren and a firetruck pulled in and he had to clue what was going on, so when he came out he was very surprised,” friend Linda Altizer said.

Many of Ditto’s friends kept this a secret and patiently awaited for the truck to come wish him a happy birthday.

One local firefighter, Kingsley Poole said the department wanted to do something special.

"He would often go to fires, he would look after our people and it's something we really want to do for him on his 90th birthday," Poole said.

"I don't know if there are words to explain him, but he is just an extreme helpful person, has a heart to help everyone, very loving and caring, he was noted to have an excellent bedside manor with all his patients," Altizer said.

His caretaker, Arleta Martin, said Ditto did the physicals for the fire department for years.

“So all these guys know him very well or at least a lot of them do," Martin said.

Ditto’s housekeeper, Janice Smith, said he was a friend to nearly everyone he came across and always willing to help.

“Actually he was like a dad to me, he would go run errands and he would trust me in his home, that really meant a lot,” Smith said.
