Shoppers Take Advantage of Maryland's Tax Free Week

- HAGERSTOWN, Md. - As kids gear up to head back to school soon, Maryland's Tax-Free Week is offering a little help to shoppers.

"We should all love tax free shopping because we pay enough taxes as it is!" said Jenn Irons, shopper.

"They can actually get more for the price!" said Cheryl Jenkins, shopper.

Maryland's Tax-Free Week kicked off this past Sunday; shoppers will not have to pay for the state's six percent sales tax for anything under $100.

"This is just a great opportunity to help give a tax break to families as they shop for back to school. Also, stores are doing a lot of sales and promotions around back to school time," said Angie Riford, director of marketing and business development.

Riford said this is the busiest time of the year for them and not every state offers this tax break.

"We've seen great traffic this week, so we've seen lines at stores first thing in the morning which has been great. We've seen a lot of shopping bags throughout the center, so we're very pleased with it," added Riford.

Many shoppers said they purposely waited for this week to buy that special outfit they have been waiting for.

"Well, the Reebok has saved a lot because they were buy one, get one 50 percent off, so two pairs of sneakers, we got for 60 dollars and that was without tax! So that would've been more expensive," added Jenkins.

"I think it was 30 percent off for all jeans and Stride Rite had a buy one shoe, get the second pair half off," added Irons.

"Well, we can save a little money or spend a little more, buy something a little fancier or maybe get some shoes to match or earrings ... our money will go further," said Elizabeth Weller, shopper.

Less money spent and more clothes and shoes to take home, a winning experience for any shopper.

This tax break will go on until this Saturday, August 16, 2014.
