Spichers: Smartphone Technology Impacts Home Security Business

HAGERSTOWN, Md. -  It seems like there is an app for almost everything these days, and home security is no exception. Spichers Appliances and Electronics is trying to spread the word about their app, allowing people to monitor and control their homes with smartphones and tablets.

"The security industry is booming,” said Chris Danzberger, Spichers security division manager. “It is definitely growing. In the next ten to 15 years, it is expected to grow 50 percent. There are a lot of people in this area that are looking to get security systems now. We get requests every day.”

A lot of that growth has to do with improved technology.

"In the past five years the technology has come a long way in the security industry,” Danzberger said.

Alarm systems these days do not just beep when someone is trying to intrude. They can alert you through your phone, and you can even control your home using your phone.

"If you think that you left your garage door open, your app will be able to tell you that your garage door is open,” Danzberger said.

Using a smart-phone app, Spichers customers can also view and move their home security cameras; arm and disarm the security system; and control locks, lights and the thermostat.

It costs anywhere from $600-$2,500 to get a Spichers security system installed, and the monthly monitoring fee is about $15-$27 dollars a month, depending on the plan.

"What we do is we sell the equipment outright and then we have lower monthly fees. In the long-run we save our customers money,” Danzberger said. "The biggest thing that [the customers] feel just a sense of comfort."

Spichers said it takes about two to three hours for them to install a full security system in a home.
