U.S. Justice Dept. Files Lawsuit Against PA State Police

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The United States Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Pennsylvania State Police and the Commonwealth, alleging employment discrimination against women.

According to the complaint, the department challenges two physical fitness tests used by state police to select entry-level troopers.

The lawsuit cites a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, stating the tests have excluded qualified women by measuring physical skills not relevant to job performance.

The department also alleges that the fitness tests have disproportionately eliminated female applicants since they were first administered in 2003.

Pennsylvania State Police released a statement saying they will challenge the lawsuit brought against them.
