New solar options for Shenandoah Valley Homeowners

NORTHERN SHENANDOAH VALLEY, Va. - A new solar power advocacy group is organizing an effort to form a cooperative for local residents in Northern Virginia interested in harnessing the power of the sun or just learning more about solar energy.

The idea is to get homeowners and landlords in an area to band together as a group and put out a request for proposals to get group rate offers from local or regional solar installers.

VA Sun, which is part of the community power network, a league of cooperatives operating in five states and Washington, D.C., has put together more than 20 solar co-ops around Virginia since 2012 and represents solar installations on about 500 Virginia homes.

"In order to issue a competitive bid on installers, we need at least 20 to 30 folks that have qualified sites. We actually qualify their sites remotely so that's what we need and I'm pretty confident we'll be able to get to that very soon," said Aaron Sutch, VA Sun Program Director.

Va Sun will hold its first informational meeting next Tuesday at Brewbaker's restaurant on North Loudoun Street in Winchester at 7 p.m.
