Winchester City Council member returns from deployment

WINCHESTER, Va. - Winchester City Council member McKannan returned back to the area recently after leaving his position to serve in Qatar.

The Virginia Army National Guard captain worked on legal reviews for the military during his nine-month deployment in the Middle East.  The deployment came about a year and half into his first term as a city council member.

“Basically, I would oversee any kind of action using soldiers,” McKannan said. “I also did review contracts to make sure that money would come out of the appropriate funds to fund the projects.”

McKannan shut down his private law firm to serve the country.

“My wife was very supportive,” McKannan said. “She’s my rock. She was holding down the folk at home and raising two kids.”

McKannan’s colleagues in municipal government were happy for his return.

“We were all very, very happy,”  Eden Freeman, who is the city’s manager, said. “We were so proud of him for serving our country and representing Winchester as well as he did.  We were all ecstatic to have him back home and here with us at City Hall.”
