Winchester Listed in "Best Hospital Rankings" Report

WINCHESTER, Va. - U.S. News & World Report released their Best Hospitals Rankings for 2014-2015 and out of all the hospitals in Virginia Winchester Medical Center (WMC) ranked fifth in the state.

"We feel like we've got great facilities, but the great facilities are only as good as the people on the inside. So we hope to continue to earn the trust and confidence of the community that we serve,” said Grady Skip Philips, chief operating officer of WMC and senior vice president of Valley Health.

The 2014-2015 rankings are drawn from nearly 5,000 hospitals.

In order to even make the list, which is relied on heavily by consumers for hospital recommendations, a hospital has to be recognized as 'high performing' in at least one of 16 areas.

"Roughly 15 percent of hospitals in the country achieve a designation in at least one area. We were highly ranked in nine of the 16 areas,” explained Philips.

The areas Winchester Medical Center ranked high performing in were; cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, urology and, new to the list this year, orthopedics.

Twelve of the 16 areas are ranked based on data from multiple sources pertaining to four primary dimensions of healthcare; outcomes, structure, process and patient safety. The other four areas are based on surveys and were not applicable to Winchester Medical Center’s operations.

"We draw patients from two to three hours [away], from a multi-state perspective,” said Philips. “We have patients from Hagerstown, from Frederick, from Luray, from throughout our service area."

It's no wonder people come all the way to Winchester to see them. None of the other major hospitals in the area received a high performance ranking in even one category.

Philips said their achievements didn’t happen overnight and were the result of a serious team effort, "It's a commitment by the employees on our team to provide care to patients and families. It's a commitment on the part of our medical staff that partner with us in providing that care. And it's a commitment from our board of trustees that help make sure we have the resources to provide that care."
