Woman Suffers Severe Burns, Flown to Hospital in Sharpsburg House Fire

- SHARPSBURG, Md. - One woman was flown to the hospital Monday morning after she escaped a large house fire in Sharpsburg, according to Washington County emergency officials. 

The blaze broke out around 8:25 a.m. along 17524 General Long Street Circle. 

Witnesses on scene say they heard several loud explosions. Fire officials say the woman, identified as Karen Lee Gillespie, 47, suffered first and second-degree burns to her extremities and face. 

She was airlifted by MSP Trooper 3 helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment. 

Approximately 40 firefighters were on the scene. Crews were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes. Companies from Virginia and West Virginia also responded. 

The Maryland State Fire Marshal says they're diligently working on determining the origin and cause of the fire. No other injuries have been reported.
