Cumberland, MD- Players and coaches from 83 years of Allegany Camper football reunited in Cumberland Friday afternoon.
The Allegany High School Varsity football team played, a team from another country for the first time in school history. The Campers hosted Grand Prairie from Canada for the international event, which the Campers won 70-13.
Following the game, at 5 PM, the Allegany Gridiron Club held a celebration on the Downtown Cumberland Mall with music from the Chinese Bandits, food, drinks, memorabilia, photos, as well as video highlights of previous games and championships.
All former players and coaches were invited to attend. Previous Head Coachess Ed Schwartz, (1958-1970), George Stimmel (1970-1977), James Refosco, (1977-1985) , Jack Gilmore, (1985-1994), and Dave Merrill (1995- 1996) were in attendance, as well as legendary Earl ‘Lefty’ Bruce, a 1949 Graduate and Player at AHS. The Campers have won eight Maryland State Championships, and have the most recorded wins in the state’s history.
