2-year-Old Boy Dies in Hospital As Result of Alleged Child Abuse

Deputies say a Thurmont man is behind bars after a 2-year-old boy was allegedly abused in his care, and subsequently died Sunday in the hospital from injuries sustained in the alleged abuse.
FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick County Sheriff's Office says a Thurmont man is behind bars after a 2-year-old boy was allegedly abused in his care, and subsequently died Sunday in the hospital from injuries sustained in the alleged abuse.

Deputies say on Sept. 5, 2013 the toddler, Robert Dean Watkins, was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital by his guardian Melissa Brittle, of Thurmont, Md. It was reported to hospital staff that Robert had fallen down about six steps and had an apparent head injury. Deputies say upon examination hospital personnel found additional injuries that were not consistent with falling down the stairs.

Child Protective Services and the Frederick County Bureau of Investigation were called to the hospital to conduct an investigation. Later that same evening, deputies say Robert was taken to Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., in critical condition.

The investigation led deputies to arrest Raymond Matthew Brittle, 39, of Apples Church Road, Thurmont, Md., on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 and charged him with first and second-degree child abuse. Brittle is currently being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on a $750,000 bond.

Deputies say on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 Robert died from his injuries at Children's Hospital. They say his body will be taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Washington, D.C. for an autopsy.

Deputies say the incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

The Frederick County Bureau of Investigation along with Child Protective Services and the Frederick County State's Attorney's Office are working together regarding additional charges in this case.
