BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. - Wednesday night was a special night for a Berkeley County educator as she was named the 2014 West Virginia teacher of the year.

Erin Sponaugle, a fifth grade teacher at Tomahawk Intermediate School in Hedgesville, received the recognition during a ceremony in Charleston.

Sponaugle has been teaching for a decade. Along with her teaching duties she's also an adviser for the student council and school newspaper. She also organizes the school's social studies fair.

Officials say as a teacher of the year, Sponaugle will receive an educational technology package valued at nearly $15,000.
