Big Ben Makes Donation to Hagerstown Fire Marshal

A representative from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation sent us a comment saying: "Hagerstown FD was able to demonstrate a need while also establishing a commitment to long-term sustainability of the unit which is important to the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation. We are proud to be able to assist their K9 unit's vital impact on their community."
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Big Ben, a powerhouse of a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is known for his size on the football field. But it's the size of his heart that's having an effect right here in Hagerstown.

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation awarded the Hagerstown Fire Marshal’s department with a grant, giving them the opportunity to add a new member to their team.

"It'll be our first K-9 assigned to the Fire Marshal's office,” said Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven.

They're using the grant to get a dog, a trained explosives detection K-9, and also for training for the dog's handler.

Hagerstown Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said this grant allows the city to replace a program that was cut because of the budget a few years back.

“The city police has had the K-9 explosive in their arsenal for a period of time now, of course that it was retired a few years ago. It's a service that we're going to be picking up," said DeHaven.

DeHaven said getting the funding is just the first step.

"What we're working on right now with a kennel….We're working to see the certification methods and training, and dogs available," said DeHaven.

They're hoping to have the training completed and the puppy by the springtime.

And of course, they welcome Ben Roethlisberger to come out to Hagerstown when they welcome their newest member.
