Black Friday Shopping Starting Earlier and Earlier

"I don't like it back when it was at noon, er, midnight was much better. But I'm afraid you know how much earlier it could get if it keeps going. There wouldn't be a Thanksgiving. So don't like that," said Starr Chenney, Black Friday shopper.
HAGERSTOWN, Md . - The hustle and bustle of Black Friday no longer starts at midnight. This year, for many stores the shopping tradition started hours before the clock even struck twelve.

"It's been earlier and earlier due to shopper demand they show up early and it just makes sense to let the merchants decide if they want to open or not and we had 60 stores, over 60 stores this year decide that they wanted to open early," said Angie Riford, Marketing Director for Hagerstown Premium Outlets.

At the Hagerstown Premium Outlets, more than 60 stores opened their doors at 8pm Thursday night, and all 100 stores openned by midnight.

"Black friday shopping is a tradition for a lot of people. We see people coming out all throughout the weekend not just during the midnight madness portion of it so we expect a very busy weekend," said Riford.

There were long lines Thursday night but some shoppers say it was hard decision to come early.

"We talked about it as far as family and stuff about it takes away from your family going out on thanksgiving. It'd be a lot easier if Black Friday would just have the sales but i mean the sales are too good to pass up," said Doug Boyd, Black Friday shopper.

And some say it takes away from Thanksgiving being Thanksgiving.

"I don't like it back when it was at noon, er, midnight was much better. But I'm afraid you know how much earlier it could get if it keeps going. There wouldn't be a Thanksgiving. So don't like that," said Starr Chenney, Black Friday shopper.

"I think that keeping it on Friday is nice. I would never go out on Thursday because I like spending time with my family," said Megan Grant, Black Friday shopper.

Premium Outlets officials say for now they'll continue to open at midnight on Friday but give each vendor the option to open earlier on Thanksgiving evening.
