Cell Phone Use Cause of Crash on South Fork Bridge

Police say the driver, Douglas Neil Harpole, 53, of Amissville was using his cell phone as he was driving in the left southbound lane when he crossed the double yellow line and sideswiped an oncoming vehicle.
WARREN COUNTY, Va. - Officers with the Front Royal Police Department have announced the cause of the three-vehicle crash that happened Monday afternoon on the South Fork Bridge.

Police say the driver, Douglas Neil Harpole, 53, of Amissville was using his cell phone as he was driving in the left southbound lane when he crossed the double yellow line and sideswiped an oncoming vehicle, driven by Nancy Bowen, of Vermont.

Harpole's 1986 Ford truck then struck a second vehicle, driven by Daniel Lynn Cook. Both Cook and his daughter, Dakota, were taken to Warren Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Officers say both northbound lanes were shut down for about an hour while crews investigated the scene. All three vehicles had extensive damage and had to be towed.

Harpole was issued a Virginia uniform summons for reckless driving. He's due in court November 26, 2013.

Anyone with further information on this incident is asked to call Officer Brad Pennington with the Front Royal Police Department at (540)-635-2111.
