Chambersburg Paid Firefighters Push Back Against Local Officials

The ongoing fight between paid firefighters in Chambersburg and local officials is heating up.
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The ongoing fight between paid firefighters in Chambersburg and local officials is heating up. The Chambersburg Borough Council is protesting Act 111: a police and firefighting arbitration, or negotiations, law.

Borough officials took their fight to the state capitol this week, saying demands made by a neutral arbitrator are not something the local tax base can support.

The arbitration between the Borough and the IAFF Firefighters Union led to a decision that equates to a 13 percent increase in wages for paid firefighters, and prohibits layoffs until 2016.

The Borough says the tax base can't support those costs, and believes that the local volunteer fire force could compenstate for fewer paid firefighters.
