Arrest Made in Frederick Sleep Inn Armed Robbery

Police said Joshua Zembower, 38, is charged with armed robbery, first and second-degree assault, theft under $1,000, and reckless endangerment.
FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - A Leesburg, Va., man is behind bars following an investigation into an armed robbery reported at the Sleep Inn in Frederick.

Police said Joshua Zembower, 38, is charged with armed robbery, first and second-degree assault, theft under $1,000, and reckless endangerment.

On Tuesday, August 12 the Frederick County Sheriff's Office responded to the Sleep Inn on 5361 Spectrum Drive. A witness reported around 11:30 p.m. a white male entered the motel and hid behind the counter. When the clerk came to see who entered the lobby, the suspect jumped over the counter and attacked the clerk.

The investigation determined the suspect, later identified as Zembower, was holding a knife in his hand and a struggle ensued between him and the clerk. During this struggle, the suspect dropped the knife, and the scuffle continued for a short period of time. Zembower was able to regain control of the knife and the clerk surrendered. He then stole money from the desk and fled the scene. The clerk was treated for minor injuries.

The next day on August 13 FCSO Crime Analysis recovered video surveillance from the Sleep Inn. The video depicted detailed information on the suspect, showing him wearing a bandanna over his face. During the struggle the bandanna fell, showing clear photos of his face.

The Frederick Police Department viewed the photos and were able to identify the suspect as Zembower. He had been arrested a little over two hours after the robbery on unrelated drug charges by a FPD officer. At the time, the police officer did not know the man committed the robbery at the Sleep Inn.

FCBI investigators learned he was already in custody at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center. The Frederick Police Department was able to provide the Frederick County Sheriff's Office with information, and search warrants were written for the vehicle Zembower was in, and the clothing he wore during the robbery.
