Fire Destroys Brunswick Townhomes, Displaces 6 Families

A multi-structure fire along Orndorff Court. in Brunswick Saturday displaced six families.
BRUNSWICK, Md. - Six families were displaced from their homes along Orndorff Court in Brunswick after a multi-structure fire quickly spread and caused an estimated $500,000 in damages.

"We had heavy fire in two units which quickly spread to the attic and loft on the other three and we stopped it in the 6th unit so we have approximately 6 units [that] were totally involved," said Asst. Chief Steve Shook, with the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Co.

Fire crews had the 3-alarm blaze under control in 30 minutes. Officals say no civilians were hurt, but one fire fighter was sent to a local hospital for heat exhaustion. One cat and one dog did not make it out of the flames.

For community members in the area, this incident is espcially traumatic.  David Powell, whose home barely missed the flames, says he has witnessed a fire take the homes of his neighbors twice now.

"This has happened twice in the past few years. I've lucked out both times. My house has no damage but the row of town houses...its incredible. Its devastating for the people around me that lost everything. The same people lost everything they had," said Powell.

The charred lofts and blackened porches are evidence of a serious fire that has scarred the Orndorff court community a second time. But neighbors say, they're hopeful they'll be able to come home again soon.
