Elderly Woman Kidnapped, Suspect in Custody

An elderly woman from Jefferson County, W.Va., has a broken arm, after police say she was kidnapped.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, W.Va. - An elderly woman is recovering after police say she was kidnapped and beaten.

Police say 49 year-old Alvaro Arthur Vilela is facing several charges, including extortion and unlawful restraint after kidnapping and beating an elderly woman.

Police say Vilela forcefully removed 74-year-old Carol Dyall from her house in Harper’s Ferry and held her hostage at his house in Martinsburg at 114 North Centre Street.

Police say the man was trying to steal money from the woman.

“We had already contacted her financial companies and alerted them she was missing and requested any odd activity through her banking institutions at which time we learned she tried to move some money,” said Cpl. J.S. Chumley, West Virginia State Police.

Police say the woman told them she was kidnapped back on January 19, 2014 though police say they were first notified the woman was missing on January 24, 2014. The victim was found with injuries.

“There were some injuries, yes, she received a broken arm and multiple bruises,” said Cpl. Chumley.

Police say Dyall was taken to Berkeley County Medical Center on Wednesday after police were able to locate her at Vilela’s house.

Police say the two know each other, that the man had done house work for the woman about a year and a half ago, but the two haven’t seen each other since.

Police say Vilela is charged with kidnapping, unlawful restraint, extortion and a violent crime against the elderly. He's currently being held at the Eastern Regional Jail pending arraignment.

Dyall has been released from the hospital. Anyone with information should contact State Police at the Charles Town barrack at (304) 725-9779.
