Firefighters Battle Large Apartment Fire

Firefighters battled a large apartment fire Saturday around 1 a.m. on the 7800 block of Winchester Avenue.
BERKELEY COUNTY, Wv. - Firefighters  responded to a large apartment fire on the 7800 block of Winchester Avenue and  Gerrardstown Road in Inwood around 1 a.m. Saturday.

Dispatchers told WHAG the fire happened in building 5134.  Several fire companies responded including: South Berkeley, Back Creek Valley,  Baker Heights, Air National Guard 167th and Berkeley County Ambulance Authority.

They also say people or someone was transported to a local hospital but  did not say whether it was an adult or a child.

Due to the fire hazard,  Route 51 was shut down for about four hours but was later opened back up around  5 a.m. when the last fire company left. Traffic was re-routed to Pilgrim Street.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
