JEFFERSON COUNTY, W.Va. - Five horses were taken off of a property in Jefferson County after officials suspected animal abuse.

Deputies along with the Jefferson County Animal Control and Loudoun County Animal Control seized the horses last Thursday on Jan. 30, 2014.

The owner, Robert Bir, 52, faces 15 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and was arraigned in Jefferson County Magistrate Court.

Bir was released on bond and the trial is currently pending.

"Reinspected and found the condition either in some horses deteriorated, and the other cases had no improvement. And it was clear they weren't taken care of," said Sheriff Pete Dougherty, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

The horses remain in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, pending further actions by the court.
