Free Blood Tests Offered Following Potential Contamination

Free blood tests are being offered to 326 patients of the Waynesboro Summit Surgical Group after finding out that some of their local anesthetic may have been contaminated.
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. - Free blood tests are being offered to 326 patients of the Waynesboro Summit Surgical Group after finding out that some of their local anesthetic may have been contaminated.

Administrators at Summit Physician Services said the possibility of infection is small, but they are taking all necessary precautions.

"We want to make sure this doesn't happen again. So we've made updates to our polices, our staff training program, and our procedures for storing supplies," stated Dr. Frank Mozdy, vice president and chief medical officer for Summit Physician Services in a release.

In a recent self-inspection, the practice found that the plastic portion of the syringe, which holds the numbing medicine, was not being thrown away properly, according to a release sent by Summit Health.

The medication was used to numb the skin for minor procedures, like the removal of moles and skin tags.

Administrators reported the issue to the Pennsylvania Department of Health and are working closely with them to assess the situation and notify patients.

Officials said the practice is now in full compliance with the most current recommendations of the Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
