SMITHSBURG, Md. - A woman had to be rescued by a helicopter Friday afternoon after experiencing stroke-like symptoms and weakness along the Appalachian Trail near Smithsburg.

The chief of operations with Smithsburg EMS says they received a third-party call around 12:15 p.m., and it took them about two hours to find the victim. They found her in a remote area of the trail, about four miles south of Smithsburg.

The woman was rescued using a rope and rescue basket. She was then taken to Meritus Medical Center.

Smithsburg EMS would like to remind people who are hiking or hunting outdoors to know your location, including the starting and ending points.

They say dress for changing weather conditions, carry plenty of food and water, and carry a fully-charged cell phone.

They also encourage people to make sure someone else knows where you will be and when you're expected to return.
