WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. - Human skeletal remains were found Sunday evening in a remote area of Hagerstown.

The remains were discovered in a wooded area off Loosen Lane in Marsh Run, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

"We were able to recover the remains, but it was difficult because that is a highly wooded area," said Deputy Carly Hose, Washington County Sheriff's Office. "The remains were down in the waterway partially submerged and there is about a 10 ft. embankment that we had to get everything up."

A person found the remains while mushroom hunting, just before 5:30 p.m. The sheriff's office says it's unknown if the skeletal remains are a man or a woman.

The remains were taken to the medical examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy.

"We will also as part of the investigation be contacting surrounding jurisdictions to see if they have any active missing person cases in hopes to identify the individual that was located," said Deputy Hose.
