FREDERICK, Md. - A Montgomery County man has been arrested on child abuse charges after police say he assaulted a six-year-old.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on May 20, 2014 in the 1000 block of Motter Avenue.

The offender in this case has been identified as Darnail Warren Jefferson, 24, with no fixed address, police say.

Throughout the investigation officers say it was determined Jefferson struck the six-year-old victim by spanking, punching, and hitting the child with a TV cord. The child sustained marks and bruises consistent with the assault.

Police say the offender's relationship to the child in this case is being withheld to protect the victim's identity.

Jefferson is charged with second-degree child abuse and second-degree assault. He was located in Montgomery County on Thursday, June 19 and was arrested for obstructing and hindering and resisting arrest.

Police say the warrant from Frederick was served to him during that time. Jefferson is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
