Meals on Wheels Expanding Delivery Routes

The deliveries are made to people 60 and older who are unable to leave their homes without assistance.
FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - Once a week, Gail Wingate from Urbana is on the road delivering a hot lunch and dinner for later with the Frederick County's Meals on Wheels program.

Wingate is the president of Friends of Meals on Wheels of Frederick County. She says, "My route takes me about an hour to do. I have seven people on the route. It might go up to about 9 or 10 on occasion."

The deliveries are made to people 60 and older who are home bound, unable to leave without assistance.

Kitty Devilbiss, Community Services Manager with Frederick County's Department of Aging, says, "Just that little bit of support that prepared meal provides for an individual is all they need to stay at home instead of a need to find a care facility."

Meals on Wheels serves areas like Downtown Frederick, the Walkersville and Woodsboro area and soon the Middletown, Myersville and Jefferson areas.

"We encourage everybody to make a contribution toward their meals but if an older adult isn't able to make a contribution, we wouldn't deny them meals for that reason," says Devilbiss. "So that's why it's so important to get help from the community to pay for those meals."

There's also a need for volunteers like Wingate.  With ten years under her belt, she says many need more than just a hearty lunch.

"You become quite close to them," says Wingate. "You see them every week, you look in on them, you notice if their conditions are changing and you come to care for them."

The deliveries to Middletown should start sometime this fall.
