Meritus Health Prepares for Large Fundraiser to Upgrade Cancer Treatment Equipment

The hospital will be hosting its 20th anniversary of the Crystal Ball in May with hopes of raising money to get more advanced technology.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - It has been a busy month for the Meritus Health Foundation.

The hospital's largest fundraiser known as the Crystal Ball is taking place next month. Each year, the ball has a different theme and this year it will be a 1920's Great Gatsby. It is one of the hospital's biggest fundraisers and has been going on since 1994.

"We have community feelers out, we have a committee who's out and about kind of fundraising within the community. They have a lot of great auction items lined up for it and a lot of great ideas," said Danielle Martin, special events coordinator.

However, it is the underlying message that makes this fundraiser so significant.

The money the hospital raises will go towards purchasing updated cancer treatment equipment. One of the most used equipment is called the Linear Accelerator; it has been used for eight years but doctors say it is time for a change.

"We're looking to upgrade to a more accurate form of treatment, and as you can imagine, everything progresses overtime - computer equipment, even the hardware behind me," said Dr. Dan Cornell, radiation oncologist.

The night is also a chance to show support for the John R. Marsh Cancer Center and its patients.

Doctors say raising money to help those patients could mean a happy ending to their story.

"It'll give us a better imaging capability. It will give us a lot of things that we need to sort of stay competitive in the cancer treatment markets," adds Dr. Cornell.

Every year, almost 300 people attend.

"The amount of community members who support it, the hospital itself by senior leaders, employees. They support this event like a backbone to the work that they do," said Martin.

This year, they are looking to raise $100,000, money aimed to make a difference.

Meritus Health says they hope to have the new equipment within the next year.
