Deputies say the 26-year-old man, who had Down syndrome, wanted to stay for a second viewing of a movie, but didn’t have another ticket. Ethan died from asphyxiation while being forcibly removed from the movie theatre.
The sheriff’s office says Saylor died as he was being handcuffed to the ground.
Patti Saylor testified Tuesday during the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing, saying her son didn't have to die that day, and she would continue to support disability rights in Ethan’s name.
Other testimony during the hearing centered on the need for additional law enforcement training in crisis intervention for people who have mental illness or developmental disabilities.
