MSP Confirms Fuel Tank Rupture in Fatal I-81 NB Crash

Investigators with Maryland State Police confirm the fuel tank did rupture inside the couple's Jeep Liberty; killing Joseph Digiovanni, 69 and his wife, Esther Digiovanni, 68, of Falling Waters.
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. - New information has been released into the fatal crash on I-81 northbound this month that left an elderly West Virginia couple dead.

Investigators with Maryland State Police confirm the fuel tank did rupture inside the couple's Jeep Liberty; killing Joseph Digiovanni, 69 and his wife, Esther Digiovanni, 68, of Falling Waters.

As we've reported,
the Digiovanni's were driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty, a model that was recalled by Chrysler several months ago.

The jeep was rear-ended by a truck right near the West Virginia-Maryland border before it burst into flames.

Police are still looking into just how fast the driver was going at the time of impact.
