Volunteers Trained by IRS Offer Free Tax Services

It’s tax season and there are free resources available to help those who need it.

FREDERICK, Md. - It’s tax season and there are free resources available to help those who need it.

The Department of Social Services in Frederick County, Md., is hosting its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. All volunteers are trained by the IRS.

“Bring in all your tax information, Social Security cards for all their dependents, as well as themselves and their spouse. Also bring photos ID's for the taxpayer and spouse,” said volunteer Hugh McConnell.

All taxpayers must appear in person and be available to sign any documents as needed. The free service is available for anyone who meets the requirements, you don't have to be a Frederick County resident.

There are several requirements to file taxes at the Department of Social Services:

-The income limit is $52,000 over any social security income

-No rental properties

-No business returns except for those with no inventory, no property subject to depreciation and expenses not over $10,000

-All taxpayers (not dependents) must appear in person. This means that a joint return requires both spouses to appear.

To find out more about the program or make an appointment call (301)-600-2612.
