Western Maryland Early Voter Turnout Below State Average

Early Voting in Maryland continues with one full day left for voters to head to the polls.
WHAG NEWS - Early voting in Maryland continues with one full day left for voters to head to the polls. Across the state, early voting is gaining traction but data from the State Board of Elections shows Western Maryland voter turnout is below the state average.

“We had the highest voter turnout statewide and also here in Frederick County that first day. It went down a little Friday, and virtually no one was voting around the state Saturday and Sunday,” said Stuart Harvey, Frederick County election director.

The latest unofficial numbers show on average 2.66 percent of voters across Maryland have turned out for early voting. Frederick County is averaging 2.01 percent, while Washington and Alleghany counties are both currently below one percent.

Garrett County meanwhile is showing a higher turnout of 2.59 percent of voters already casting their primary ballot. Local election leaders are urging voters to head to the polls. They say early voting runs through Thursday night.

“If they were registered by the voter registration deadline June 3rd  they can come in and vote early voting,” said Harvey. “There's virtually no waiting, it's easy and pretty much on your schedule.”

Others in the community are doing their part as well. The League of Women voters and Frederick Area Ministerial Association are hosting a forum for Frederick County residents to meet their candidates on Wednesday June 18, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Faux School.

“Anybody's who has any questions at all can come and ask their county council candidates and know who they are going to vote for in early voting or on Tuesday,” said Frederick County resident Katie Nash.

Election officials say they continually see the lowest turnout in Washington County. The latest data shows less that 900 people have turned out so far, of the more than 89,000 eligible to vote in these primary elections.

If you live in Frederick County, Md., you can vote early at the Urbana Public Library, the Thurmont Library and over at The Frederick Senior Center.
