100 Day Challenge to Hire Veterans is Underway

Operation Hire is underway in Maryland. It's an initiative to encourage local businesses and organizations to hire veterans.
FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - Maryland State Police say they're actively recruiting America’s best to join Maryland’s finest.

“Our history of recruiting veterans goes all the way back even to World War II, and two MSP World War II veterans who were killed in action, and since then and till this day we still actively recruit veterans,” said Corporal Gregg Harrington, Military Liaison for the Maryland State Police.

Corporal Gregg Harrington served 23 years in the Army and completed three deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s just one of hundreds of veterans that make up the Maryland State Police serving communities across the state. State police continue to look to hire other veterans as part of Governor Martin O’Malley and Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown's campaign Operation Hire, a 100 day veteran hiring challenge.

“Veterans bring remarkable skill sets and qualities to our civilian work environment. They display fierce loyalties and commitment, a strong work ethic, excellent problem solving capabilities and technical training,” said Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. “Supporting veteran employment is not only good for our veterans and their families; it is good for our communities and our businesses."

Cpl. Harrington says many of his skills from the Army transfer over to his job and its not just sworn troopers they’re looking to hire, but also for staff and administrative positions.

“There’s a wide variety of jobs were hiring for and the veteran pool is who we're trying to grab from and steal from,” said Cpl. Harrington.

Other businesses across the state are participating in Operation Hire. The challenge is part of a bigger goal to help fulfill one of the 16 strategic goals of the O’Malley-Brown administration, which is full employment for veterans in the State by the end of 2015.

Locally in Western Maryland, the Governor’s office says Home Depot in Hagerstown is also participating in Operation Hire.
