November 2008 Student Athletes of the Month

THE NBC 25 Student Athletes for November

Congratulations to the NBC 25 Student Athletes of the Month.  Our female Student Athlete of the Month is Bethany Garnand, a senior at Smithsburg high school.  Bethany plays soccer and softball for the leopards.

"School comes first, I've always been taught that since I was little," she says. "So even if it means staying up until two in the morning to study for AP Bio, that's what you have to do, so that's what happens."

Off the field Bethany carries a 4.22 G.P.A. and is ranked first in her class.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and participates in Student Government.  After high school, Bethany hopes to become a surgeon.

"I've always been interested in the medical field.  My grandmother is a nurse, and I like biology, so I'm planning to major in biology and hopefully go to med school."

Our male Student Athlete of the Month is Mountain Ridge senior Cody Felker.  Cody is a three-year letter winner for the Miners, and has been a starter since his sophomore year.

"School comes first, so I get that done first, then practice, then outside I guess," says Cody  "You've got to get your homework done... Then practice.

Cody maintains a 4.0 G.P.A, is a member of the National Honor Society, is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and earned a "Minds in Motion" award in 2007.  He's planning to attend Frostburg State next fall to study wildlife and fisheries.

"Ever since I was little I've been outdoors, so I figure if I can get a job doing something I like, I should do it, so if I can get into wildlife and fisheries, maybe DNR."

Congratulations to Bethany Garnand, and Cody Felker, The NBC 25 Student Athletes of the Month.
