One Dead in Hit and Run

WHAG News has confirmed one person was killed in a hit and run early Tuesday morning.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- Tuesday police said one woman was killed and the search for the driver who hit her is ongoing.

Before sunrise, police found Lisa Ruth Wellham lying in the median on Dual Highway between Cleveland Avenue and Eastern Boulevard.

"Officers responded and found a pedestrian had been struck and they were transported to Meritus medical center where they later pronounced dead,” said Captain Tom Langston of the Hagerstown Police Department.

The Hagerstown Police Department said it was not the first time they saw Wellham that morning.

"Our department was running a sobriety checkpoint at the 700 block of Dual Highway and when she came through the checkpoint she was found to have a medical emergency that community rescue service was called for," said Sgt. John Lehman of the Hagerstown Police Department.

The police say CRS deemed her not fit to drive home and the police took action.

"For her welfare we transported her to a friend's house for her welfare," said Lehman.

Around 4:00 a.m., Wellham called the emergency communications center to ask about the location of her car. Just a few minutes later she was hit.

Officers are asking for the community's help in finding the driver.

“If anybody was driving on the Dual Highway to the 700 to 900 block of Dual Highway early this morning around 4:15 am  that may have witnessed the accident to call the Hagerstown City Police department," said Lehman.
