Police Search for Man in Chase, Auto Theft

Officers with the Hagerstown Police Department are searching for a man who led them on a chase through the city, in a stolen vehicle.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Officers with the Hagerstown Police Department are searching for a man who led them on a chase through the city, in a stolen vehicle. 

Police say they received a call around 10:29 p.m. Sunday for the report of a stolen black Chevrolet. Officers were able to locate the missing vehicle around 11:49 p.m., traveling south in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.

"Later on by 11:30, one of our officers located the car, made contact with the driver, one of the officers asked him to leave, the driver fled," said Captain Langston, Hagerstown Police Department.

As officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, it fled the area. The vehicle was then spotted later several blocks away and once again fled from police. 

Police continued to search the area, and found the stolen vehicle disabled in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot. 

"At which point, we had our K-9 teams searching for him and we got assistance from the Maryland State Police helicopter help us look for it," adds Langston.

After further investigation into the incident, police have identified the driver as Mark Anthony Smith, 27, of Hagerstown. He's charged with theft of motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding police, and numerous other traffic offenses. 

Police say Smith has yet to be apprehended. According to police, Smith has a long rap sheet. Court documents show he recently made parole, and police say warrants have been issued for his arrest.

The car was eventually returned to its owner and there is no word on whether there were damages.
