Police Still Trying to Piece Together Death of Mother and Two Young Children

"It's very possible that it was just a heat-related death, but we aren't closing out anything right now," said Captain Paul Kifer with the Hagerstown Police Department.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Officers with the Hagerstown City Police Department are still trying to piece together the death of a mother and her two young children. The three were found dead inside a parked SUV at Western Heights Middle School Monday afternoon.

"The two children, both females, both hers," said Captain Paul Kifer with the Hagerstown Police Department. "One was six months old, one was 18 months old."

Officials say the mother inside has been identified as a 32-year-old woman, originally from Guyana, a sovereign state in South America. According to police, the woman lived in the east end of Hagerstown. She previously resided in West Virginia

"That's what the detectives are really focusing in on right now, is trying to locate the family and try to patch in some of the whereabouts where she was yesterday prior to when she pulled onto the parking lot," Kifer said.

As we've reported, officials responded to the parking lot at the school around 4:30 p.m. Monday, after a teacher at the school notified police about a woman and two children unresponsive inside a car.

Hagerstown police say the vehicle was found not running, all the windows were up, and all the doors were shut. They say when first responders arrived the inside of the vehicle was hot when they opened the door.

"It's very possible that it was just a heat-related death," Kifer said. "But we're not closing out anything right now."

Police said there was no indication the woman caused her own death, or the death of her two children. They say no suspicious items, such as pills or drugs, were discovered in the SUV.

Officers say currently there's no indication why she would be in the west side of Hagerstown, when she currently lives in the east side. They say the woman has no affiliation or ties to any students, faculty, or staff at the middle school.

According to police, the mother bought an item at a Hagerstown Walmart on Monday and they're working to track it down. Police did not specify what the item was.

The children's father currently lives in Hagerstown and has been notified of their deaths, police say. The department is currently trying to locate immediate family members of the mother. The investigation remains ongoing.
