HAGERSTOWN, Md. - A woman is dead after being hit by a vehicle on the Dual Highway early Thursday morning.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office in investigating the fatal accident, where the driver was one of their own. WHAG talked with deputies Thursday morning to get the details, and see how they're handling this serious situation.
The deputy has been identified as Deputy First Class Bryan Teets with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Before sunrise around 3:30 a.m. on the Dual Highway, near Cornell Avenue, a female pedestrian was struck by Deputy Teets, driving a sheriff's department vehicle. Deputy Teets was on duty at the time. The woman was taken to Meritus Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
The sheriff's office was on the scene all morning investigating the situation. They shutdown the eastbound lane on Dual Highway between Mount Aetna Road and Eastern Blvd.
"We investigate it like you do do every accident to the fullest to see what took place. This morning what is going on now is that we have an accident deconstructionist team that is out taking measures and trying to go through the steps to recreate what happened," said Deputy Carly Hose, Washington County Sheriff's Office.
The eastbound lane on Dual Highway was shut down for nearly five hours Thursday.
At the request of the family, the identity of the female pedestrian is not being released at this time.
DFC Teets has been placed on paid administrative leave, as standard procedure. The Maryland State Police is assisting the sheriff's office with the investigation. At the conclusion of the investigation all information will be reviewed by the States Attorney's Office.
