Update: Man Dies in Multi-Vehicle I-81 Crash, Dog Escapes

Pennsylvania State Police said the collision happened just before 12 a.m. Sunday, August 3, along I-81 northbound in Southampton Township.
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. - One man is dead following a serious overnight accident along Interstate-81, that involved multiple tractor trailers.

Pennsylvania State Police said the collision happened just before 12 a.m. Sunday, August 3, along I-81 northbound in Southampton Township. Both northbound lanes were closed at mile marker 25.

Troopers said the crash occurred when two tractor trailers, one driven by Marshall Ray Chapman, 33, of Newark, Ohio and the other driven by William Russell Stallings, 51, of Newton, North Carolina, were stopped in the right lane of I-81. A third tractor trailer driven by Craig M. Camp, 43, of Rochester, New York, was slowly moving forward in the left lane of I-81 at mile marker 25.

A fourth tractor trailer, driven by Richard Sullivan, 49, of Chatsworth, Georgia, was traveling north in the right lane when state police said he failed to stop for the stopped vehicles, striking the rear of Chapman's tractor trailer, pushing it into Stallings' vehicle.

Two of the tractor trailers were reportedly on fire, when crews arrived on the scene. State police said Sullivan died on scene. Chapman suffered moderate injuries and Stallings suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to Chambersburg Hospital. Camp was not injured in the collision, police say.

Dispatch said the accident shut down portions of the interstate for seven hours Monday morning.

A dog, Bella, was inside the tractor trailer with Sullivan during the crash, according to the Mountain View Veterinary Services in Shippensburg. The dog ran away from the scene and was missing for about a day before she was found. She sustained severe injuries to her leg and officials said it had to be amputated. She is currently at the animal hospital before heading back home to Georgia.
