SMITHSBURG, Md. - About 14 hours later, Smithsburg residents finally have water.

Many residents were left without water Wednesday after a water main broke around midnight. The break happened in the town square, between Main and Water Streets.

Crews were expected to work into the evening to get the main line fixed, but were able to complete the job by 4 p.m. Wednesday. All Smithsburg public schools were closed due to the break.

Traffic has returned to normal.

-------- Reported 5/28 Wednesday morning

SMITHSBURG, Md. - A single large and two minor water main breaks are causing serious problems in Smithsburg Wednesday.

School officials confirm Smithsburg Elementary, middle and high schools are closed for the day due to the breaks.

City officials also say Smithsburg EMS and some town residents are either without water or with low pressure.

Currently one lane between Water Street and Main Street is shut down. Crews are working to repair the problem, but say it may not be until the evening until the issue is fixed.

"Just water bubbling out the ground. We got the call to come out and try and fix it, we came to shut this one down and take the pressure off of this line, and then another one occurred up around the corner. When we tried to that one to relieve the pressure, another one started," said Norman Potter, Smithsburg Public Works Department.

Traffic around the incident is limited. Just months ago, another water main break in the same section of town was reported. Officials say the two are not related as the current breaks were caused by a fluctuation in pressure.

The school district says the schools will not have to make up this day at the end of the year.
