'Superheroes' Honor Spirit of Laken Cardran

"Recalling memories of Laken has been something to make us smile, something to encourage us," said Vice Principal Jason Bearinger, of Westside Elementary School.

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Since Laken Cardran's tragic and sudden death, nothing has been the same for the students and staff at Westside Elementary School.

And now superheroes have come to represent his spirit.

To remember him and honor his memory students and staff at Westside Elementary came to school dressed as superheroes.

"He promised you. Whatever something he wanted to do and you would do it for him," said a kindergartener in Laken's class.

For these kindergarteners, Laken was their hero.

"They knew him well, they will tell you stories how fast of a runner he was, and his favorite super hero," said Vice Principal Jason Bearinger, of Westside Elementary School.

The students and staff all dressed the part. Spiderman was Laken's favorite.

Although Bearinger says this week has been incredibly challenging for all students and staff, paying tribute to Laken as superheroes has helped them to remember him with a smile.

"Recalling memories of Laken has been something to make us smile, something to encourage us," said Bearinger.
