Three Sentenced in Federal Court on Heroin Charges

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Despite the crackdown on heroin from local law enforcement agencies, the Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Northwestern region of Virginia has had 23 heroin overdose deaths this year.

It’s a sobering statistic compared to last year's 21 heroin overdose deaths, and only one reported death in 2012.

Law enforcement agencies said the heroin epidemic is a problem that they “can’t arrest their way out of,” leaving rehab facilities scrambling to create and test prevention and treatment methods.

Even though hospitals, courts, jails and rehab facilities are inundated with heroin cases, some people are paying for their heroin-related crimes.

On Wednesday, Dwayne Fletcher and Megan Wooddell were sentenced in a federal district court for distributing heroin.

The statement of facts revealed Fletcher and Wooddell would drive to Philadelphia weekly to purchase bricks of heroin to be brought back to Strausburg. In a press release from the Office of United States Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy, the drug-dealing duo brought enough of the drug to Strasburg to provide each of the town’s 6,398 residents with a dose of heroin.

Fletcher was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison, and Wooddell was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison.

Dean Roberson, 32, of Stephens City, Va., was also sentenced on Wednesday.

On March 21, 2014, Roberson sold heroin he bought in Baltimore, Md., to a woman in Stephens City. The unidentified woman overdosed, and medical personnel said she would have died if they had not intervened.

Roberson was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for distributing heroin that resulted in an overdose injury, and distribution of methamphetamine.
