Tractor Trailer Strikes Five Cars

Five cars were hit when the tractor trailer lost control. Two people were taken to area hospitals with injuries.
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Two people were taken to area hospitals Tuesday after a tractor trailer lost control during a massive traffic backup, hitting five cars.

Initially, around 10:30 p.m. Monday an overturned tractor trailer blocking all westbound lanes of I-68 caused the roadway to shut down for two hours. State police say the tractor trailer, driven by James Marshall, 63, of OH, was traveling westbound on I-68 in the area of Town Hill, and failed to negotiate a curve.

The truck traveled from lane two, across lane one, where it struck the median guardrail and overturned blocking all lanes. The vehicle was towed from the scene and no injuries were reported.

While motorists were waiting for the roadway to reopen, a second tractor trailer, driven by Anthony Powell, of Delaware, was driving too fast for the conditions and struck five vehicles around 11:13 p.m. Monday.

Two people were taken to Western Maryland Health System with minor injuries.

State police say charges were issued to the driver of both tractor trailers as a result of the collisions.
