Traffic Cameras Keep Watch as Local School Moves to New Location

Although the school building has moved, drivers will want to remember that the school-zone traffic cameras aren't going anywhere.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The demolition crews left Bester Elementary school's property in Hagerstown on Tuesday. It's been years in the making and the old Bester Elementary School is now a thing of the past.

The 12.8 acre lot on the corner of Memorial and South Potomac is changing.

Washington County Public School Deputy Superintendent, Boyd Michael, said it’s a great feeling to finally see the finishing stages.

“You’ll be seeing large pieces of equipment move off sight today and we'll see the road base continue with them,” Michael said. “We hope to see asphalt by early next week, a base coat of that going down in the parking lot; a lot of curbs has been put in.”

School officials said the new area will benefit students and parents, because plans include a new drop off area. The new parent drop off will be through South Potomac Street.

“All the comments we've received from parents, from teachers, from students themselves, they're very excited about the new building and were anxious to open it on August 20,” Michael said.

Although the school building has moved, drivers will want to remember that the school-zone traffic cameras aren't going anywhere.

An officer with the Hagerstown Police Department, Tim Rossiter, is in charge of the automated speed enforcement systems (ASES) or the traffic cameras near the schools.

"These are going to be staying where they are because the school property line hasn't changed, just the building itself has moved,” Rossiter said. "We call it the safe speed for students program, to get drivers to change their driving habits around schools.”

Rossiter said there are 11 ASES throughout Washington County and they operate Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. year round.

Michael said he hopes to see asphalt early next week and grass will be added to the play grounds in the next couple of weeks.
