WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. - Fire and smoke marked a tragic morning on I-81 northbound in Washington County.

According to Maryland State Police two people, a man and a woman, are dead following a three-vehicle crash along the interstate. State police have released the names as Joseph Digiovanni, 69 and his wife, 68-year-old Esther Digiovanni of Falling Waters, West Virginia.

According to troopers, the two were killed on impact and pronounced dead on scene.

"Due to the rear end collision of the Jeep Liberty it caused the gas tank to rupture. Once the gas tank ruptured the whole vehicle was engulfed in flames,” said Lt. Michael Fluharty, Maryland State Police.

Maryland state police say a pickup truck rear-ended the jeep and a suburban at the same time.

“The traffic on Interstate-81 was slow due to some construction ahead as the vehicles were slowing for traffic, the white pickup truck failed to yield due to speed which struck the jeep liberty in the rear,” said Lt. Fluharty.

Due to the accident, Interstate-81 northbound was shut down for about five hours and eventually reopened around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

According to Maryland State Police, the victim's bodies were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
