Virginia Leans Towards School Bus Cameras

The City of Winchester School Board has approved a 60 day trial for bus cameras.

WINCHESTER, VA - The City of Winchester School Board has approved a 60 day trial for bus cameras.

Two buses will kick off the trend and if the results are successful the cameras will be permanently installed on every bus.

School officials say bus drivers see about five to ten cars per day pass the school bus stop sign, something they hope the cameras will soon prevent.

"They just always need to be watching for school buses. Whenever they see a school bus, they need to be prepared that that bus may stop at anytime," says Transportation Coordinator, Sherry Whittington.

School officials say the cameras do not cost the city any money. In fact they say the violation fees alone will probably take care of the cost to install the cameras.

The test cameras for the trial will be installed within the next couple of weeks.
