Warm Day at Whitetail for Cedar Ridge Fundraiser

It was warm on the mountain Sunday afternoon where people were competing all for a good cause.
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - It's the last day of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, but the excitement at Whitetail Ski Resort is still high.

It was warm on the mountain Sunday afternoon where people were competing all for a good cause.

"People come here and they put together cardboard sleds based on glue, paint, tape, and that's about it," said Dave Swacina, CEO of Cedar Ridge Ministries.

It's all to raise money for Cedar Ridge Adventures.

"We definitely use the money to benefit the work we do with at-risk youth that live at Cedar Ridge, so we have a year-round program for them. We do adventures, stuff to help them to hopefully see and put into practice some of the things we're asking them to change about their lives," said Eric Valentine, director of Cedar Ridge Adventures.

Whitetail Officials said this event comes at a good time because people have been excited about the Winter Olympics.

"With the Winter Olympics being televised, and the U.S. participants and athletes doing quite well, it has brought a renewed interest in skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and just in general more excitement about the winter season," said general manager of Whitetail, Don Macaskill.

Some participants said this was better than the Olympics because they could work as a team and compete but help out a good cause.

"This is a fundraiser so Cedar Ridge Ministries gets to benefit from all this creativity. It's awesome, I mean just the amount of creativity in the parking lot here is awesome,” one of the participants, Brian Caron said. “It's a beautiful day, what more could you ask for?"

They might not have asked for it but they said they also had a lot of fun.

There were about 60 participants this year for the Cardboard Sled Derby.  Officials with Cedar Ridge said they raise an average of a few thousand dollars with this event.
