Waynesboro Community Mourns After Fatal Crash

WAYNSBORO, Pa. - The Waynesboro community is shocked after a car accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and severely injured three others yesterday evening.

Friends and family have left flowers and messages for the Waynesboro man who died, Brent Kauffman and for the three others injured.

Broken concrete and shattered glass were also scattered in the area of Tomstown Road where the accident occurred Sunday evening.

Jordon Hampton has known Brent since grade school. He says he cannot believe his best friend is gone.

"He was my best friend,” said Hampton. “I spent every day with him. But last night it seems the only night I’m not with him, I get the phone call you know."

Three others, Cody Holtry, 19, William Socks, 16, and Taylor Guilfoyle were critically injured and flown to area hospitals.

Police say Holtry lost control while driving at a high speed past a curve. The car hit the guardrail, a concrete culvert and then flipped over.

"They had to bring three helicopters in and take each one of them out individually by helicopter,” said Bob Blubaugh, who lives across the street from where the accident happened.

Neighbors say this isn't the first time they've seen serious car accidents on this stretch of road.

"We see it all the time,” said Blubaugh. “There's nobody traveling at 45 mph. It's more like 60 to 80."

Police are still investigating the accident, and for Brent’s loved ones, there are still many unanswered questions.

As they try to cope with their loss, they say they want people to remember him as the fun and caring person he was.

"He was the funny guy,” said Hampton. “He always made me laugh, always made me smile. No matter how mad I was or how hurt I was. He always brought me back.”

Kauffman’s loved ones say they are trying to raise funds for his funeral. They say the least they can do is make sure he gets a proper burial. If you want to help the family, click here.
